Spring is beautiful but it can also be a nuisance for many people. The season brings flower buds and trees, but it also triggers an immune response in some individuals. As plants begin to release billions of tiny pollen in the air. Lots of people start suffering from symptoms of allergies when they inhale these pollen. Let’s read about the common spring allergy symptoms and causes, also ways to prevent them.

Common symptoms include:

·         Sneezing

·         Runny nose

·         Red and watery eyes

·         Postnasal drip

Less common symptoms include:

·         Headache

·         Shortness of breath

·         Coughing, wheezing, or difficulty breathing

·         Fever

The good news is that there are several ways to treat and prevent the uncomfortable symptoms associated with spring allergies. In this blog, we will discuss five effective ways to alleviate the symptoms of spring allergies.

Prevention strategies for spring allergy

Seasonal allergies can be treated in a variety of ways, depending on how bothersome the symptoms are. Knowing what someone is allergic to is an important part of treatment. Most people can find relief by limiting or eliminating their exposure to allergens. To prevent exposure to pollen and mold, you can take the following steps:

1.        Avoid allergens

One of the most effective ways to prevent spring allergies is to avoid allergens that trigger your symptoms. Pollen is the primary culprit of spring allergies. To minimize exposure to pollen, avoid going outside during peak pollen hours, which are usually between 5 am and 10 am. Keep your windows closed and use an air purifier indoors. Wash your hands and face regularly to remove any pollen that may have accumulated on your skin or hair. Also, change your clothes when you come inside, and don’t hang your laundry outside to dry.

2.        Use medication

Over-the-counter medications can provide relief from spring allergies. Antihistamines can help alleviate sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. Nasal sprays can reduce inflammation in your nasal passages, which will alleviate congestion. Decongestants can help reduce swelling in your nasal passages, which will make it easier to breathe. Always follow the instructions on the medication label and consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication.

3.        Try natural remedies

Natural remedies may also provide relief from spring allergies. Some studies suggest that consuming local honey can help alleviate symptoms. Local honey contains small amounts of pollen, which may help your immune system build up a tolerance to pollen. However, more research is required to validate this theory. Another natural remedy that can both soothe and open nasal passages is steam inhalation. Place a bowl of boiling water on a table to inhale steam. Wrap a towel around your head, face, and bowl and inhale the vapors. You may add essential oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint. Another remedy that may help stave off allergy symptoms is saline rinses.  By removing excess nasal mucus, and irritants from the sinuses and nasal passages, saline rinses can ease congestion and stuffy nose symptoms.

4.        Maintain good indoor air quality

Good indoor air quality can help alleviate spring allergy symptoms. Instead of using a fan to cool your house, which brings in outside air, use an air conditioner. Keep your indoor air dry with a dehumidifier. Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter to capture airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and pet dander. Vacuum your floors regularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove allergens from your carpets and rugs. Change your HVAC filter regularly, and keep your home clean and free of dust.

5.        Build up your immune system

Building up your immune system can help reduce your sensitivity to allergens. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can provide your body with essential vitamins and minerals to support your immune system. Regular physical activity can also help improve your immune function. Getting enough rest and managing stress can also help reduce inflammation in your body and improve your overall health.

Final thoughts

In conclusion, spring allergies can be bothersome, but they are treatable. By avoiding allergens, using a medication, trying natural remedies, maintaining good indoor air quality, and building up your immune system, you can alleviate your symptoms and enjoy the season. If your symptoms persist, consult with your healthcare provider to determine the best treatment plan for you.
