During the executive board meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) held in Bahrain earlier this month, it was discussed that Pakistan could host some matches of this year’s Asia Cup while India could play their matches in the UAE. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) restated its position of not being willing to travel to Pakistan for the tournament.
In October, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the chairman of the ACC, had stated at the AGM in Mumbai that India would not be sending their team to Pakistan for the Asia Cup.

The reason given for this decision was the lack of necessary clearance from the government. However, the BCCI is open to the idea of playing in a different country where the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be the host. Dubai and Sharjah are being considered as potential venues for India’s matches.
According to sources, a compromise solution has been proposed which would allow Pakistan to host matches involving teams other than India, while India would play their matches in the UAE. If India reaches the final, it will also take place in Dubai.
The ACC board will convene next month to finalize the venue for the 50-over Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be held in September, prior to the World Cup in October-November.

The BCCI believes that this compromise will help to appease the PCB, and could also result in a commitment from the Najam Sethi-led board to tour India for the World Cup.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed a strong desire to host the Asia Cup and has cited the recent visits by England, New Zealand, and Australia as evidence that Pakistan is a safe destination for international teams. Last year, the Asia Cup was played in the T20 format due to the upcoming World Cup in Australia, with Sri Lanka emerging as the champions.
The PCB had previously threatened to withdraw from the Asian Cricket Council if India refused to play in Pakistan. However, following the ACC’s executive board meeting in Bahrain, a statement was released indicating that “constructive dialogue” had taken place regarding the 2023 Asia Cup.
The board has agreed to continue discussions on the tournament’s logistics and timing to ensure its success, with an update on the matter to be given at the next executive board meeting in March 2023.
