The young batter Tom Abell has been ruled out of England’s upcoming tour to Bangladesh, which will include three ODIs and three T20Is. Somerset captain Abell received his maiden call-up for the senior team and is set to make his England debut after being named in both the T20I and ODI squads.

The 28-year-old will miss the upcoming white-ball series in Bangladesh due to a side injury. The uncapped batter sustained an injury while bowling the first ball of his third over during the England Lions’ victory against Sri Lanka A in Colombo on Wednesday. The middle-order batter didn’t complete his over, and didn’t bat as the Lions successfully chased down the target with four wickets in hand.

Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, expressed disappointment in Tom’s injury, saying his ability had been demonstrated over a number of seasons. Hurray said the team will focus on getting him back to playing and providing the help he needs during his rehab.

“He has shown over a number of seasons the quality of player he is, and picking up an injury at this time is incredibly frustrating for him. We will focus now on ensuring he receives all the appropriate support he needs during a period of rehabilitation through to him returning to play,” Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry said.

England have opted not to name an official replacement for Abell in the ODI squad for the first leg of the tour, leaving them with just six recognised batsmen in the squad, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Moeen Ali, and skipper Jos Buttler. Will Jacks, who is currently with the Test team in New Zealand, could join the white-ball squad if he is not selected for the second Test in Wellington.
