India will host the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in October and November. The team management is currently not considering Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the T20I format as they are more focused on the upcoming World Cup at home. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt believes that Team India is yet to move away from the senior players in the shorter format.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not featured in a single T20 international since India’s 10-wicket loss to England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and have played only ODIs against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The team management tried young players Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill as openers in the recent T20I series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand at home.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt feels that Team India rested their senior players to try out the younger players. The former Pakistan opener feels that the career of the veteran duo in the shorter format is not over yet.

“I don’t think Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s T20I cricket is over. Just because they were rested against New Zealand and other youngsters did well, doesn’t mean you will forget the veterans altogether,” Salman Butt said.

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has stated that the team management has not decided to move on senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20Is. Dravid stated that they were rested to prepare for the four-match Test series against Australia.

“There are certain priorities that we need to give to certain white-ball tournaments at a particular time. With the amount of cricket we are playing – a four-match Test series vs Australia which is a potential qualifier for the World Test Championship Final – there are certain white-ball tournaments that we must prioritize.”

“The priority after the last T20 World Cup is these six (ODI) games and Virat has played all these games. He will get a bit of a break along with Rohit and one or two other guys, where we’ll play some T20 cricket. They’ll come refreshed and we have a good week’s camp before we play Australia.”
