Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t impressed with Delhi Capitals (DC) not utilizing Axar Patel properly with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. He said that there was stubbornness in the team to not promote the southpaw up the order.
Delhi Capitals had the worst possible season in the IPL 2023. They were the first team to get knocked out of the tournament as they failed to get going in all three departments. Apart from that it’s fair to say that some poor management was too on the offer, which saw them crumbling.

Axar Patel single-handedly bailed DC out of trouble in many games and played some magnificent knocks that helped them win a few games as well. But despite being in form, team management didn’t utilize him well as he batted below 6 for almost the whole season.

Sunil Gavaskar said that Delhi Capitals were stubborn in not promoting Axar Patel up their batting order despite him being in good form. He also highlighted how poor management even made Ravi Shastri question if the all-rounder had signed a contract with a team that he won’t bat above No.7. Writing in his column for Sportstar, he said:
“There was the stubborn, almost defiant refusal to promote the in-form Axar Patel up the batting order. It prompted Ravi Shastri, who had coached the Indian team until last year and seen the batting ability that Axar has, to question if there was something in the contract that said Patel wouldn’t bat above number 7 in the batting order.”
Axar Patel contributed equally well with both bat and ball in the IPL 2023. He scored 282 runs and picked up 11 wickets for DC in IPL 2023.

Prithvi Shaw was the biggest disappointment for Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023. The batter struggled to score runs and was also dropped from the team after the poor performances. He scored just 106 runs from 8 games.
Sunil Gavaskar also pointed out Prithvi Shaw’s poor form and highlighted how balls around his ribcage troubled him. He explained:
“Prithvi Shaw has also not been able to come to terms with the delivery around the ribcage, and the result has been a shortage of runs from some of the most promising and prolific young players in the country.”
Delhi Capitals ended the season 9th on the points table with 5 wins out of their 14 games.
